What is aphasia therapy?
Traditional aphasia therapy typically involves sessions with a speech-language pathologist who uses structured exercises and activities to help individuals improve their language skills.
These sessions focus on restoring speech, listening comprehension, reading, and writing through repetitive practice, often using picture naming, word retrieval drills, and conversational practice.
Sessions may also include training in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), which are tools and strategies used to support or replace natural speech for individuals with communication impairments. AAC can include anything from picture boards to high-tech speech-generating devices.
Therapy is usually tailored to the individual's specific type and severity of aphasia, with goals centered on regaining functional communication abilities.
Traditional therapy may also include family training to support communication in daily life.
