What is Aphasia Therapy?

Aphasia therapy is a type of treatment provided by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) to help people improve their ability to communicate after language loss caused by conditions such as stroke or brain injury.

The goal of aphasia therapy is to strengthen language skills, help individuals communicate more effectively in everyday life, and support daily life participation. Click here to learn more about Life Participation Approach in aphasia care.

How Aphasia Therapy Works

During AphasiaCo’s therapy sessions, a speech-language pathologist uses structured exercises and real-life communication activities to support recovery of language skills and strategies to support current abilities. Treatment typically focuses on four key areas of communication:

  • Speaking: practicing word retrieval, naming objects or pictures, and forming sentences

  • Listening: improving understanding of spoken language and following directions

  • Reading: working on recognizing words, sentences, and written information

  • Writing: practicing spelling, sentence formation, and written communication

Activities may include picture naming, word-finding exercises, conversation practice, and tasks that simulate real-life communication situations.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

For people who have significant difficulty speaking, therapy may also introduce Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) strategies. AAC tools help individuals express themselves using other methods, such as:

  • Picture boards

  • Communication books

  • Speech-generating devices

  • Communication apps on tablets or phones

The goal of AAC is to be a tool for communication. These tools can support communication while language skills improve or serve as a long-term communication method.
